Inspired by the unspoken tension between Taiwan and mainland China, this project reimagines the round table, a shared symbol of reunion, as a site of division. Traditionally centered on sharing food and the cyclical flow of social interaction among loved ones, this table features a modified lazy Susan designed to prevent items from reaching the opposing side. This work invites diverse audiences to project their own perspectives onto the experience. It reflects how individuals are shaped by forces beyond their control and the harmony — much like the unreachable side of the table — is difficult to attain.

Unresolved TalkTalk in Silence

Talk in Silence is the first work in the Unresolved Talk series. It is a live performance featuring an interactive installation. Participants share a meal at a non-rotating table in a public setting while passersby observe. Half of the dishes are from Shanghai and prepared by Haoren, while the other half are from Taiwan and prepared by Ray. The table’s design makes it difficult for participants on one side to share their dishes with those on the other, allowing discomfort, separation, and negotiation to emerge organically.

Unresolved TalkLeftovers

Leftovers is a kinetic work in the Unresolved Talk series. A flashing light intermittently interrupts attempts to share food across the table, examining how mechanical resistance shapes behavior and communication. Written messages from both artists are embedded within the table; however, neither artist has been able to read the other’s words. Only participants can access them. To this day, both artists remain unaware of what the other wrote.
